Some people say, “Hey, you’re a folk singer, why don’t you write a protest song?” They think I should sing angry songs about angry causes. I know there are a lot of problems in this world. My eyes are open. I could write a song about injustice. I could make a laundry list of the fires that are burning. I don’t think a song would put any of those fires out.
Maybe I’m naive. Everything could be solved, if we loved our neighbors, expanded our definition of neighbor, and most importantly minded our own business.
I can’t write a protest song because I’m not against anything. I used to have a bumper sticker that proclaimed, “Mean People Suck.” It might be true but I can’t say that I am anti-mean people. They are sad and scared. Mean people are just potential kind people who need more hugs.
Maybe I am naive. Everything could be solved, if we loved our neighbors, expanded our definition of neighbor, and most importantly minded our own business.
