I read an article that condemned musicians for celebrating the anniversary of their records. The argument is that a listener doesn’t need an arbitrary milestone to enjoy the music. Art is not like wine. Years don’t make the record better. I understand this idea in general and it is probably valid. However, I think it is somewhat convoluted by the existence of massive pop stars and the algorithms that constantly demand new material.
I don’t care about industry standards. I like to celebrate anniversaries. It’s a good reason to pause and remember specific moments. Today, I am taking some time to remember what it felt like to make my Judgement record. I am sure it isn’t my greatest work but it marks the beginning of my weird folk journey. It was during the making of this record way back in 2010 that I began to understand who I am as an artist.
