I know it won’t be a popular opinion but I think Christmas morning is overrated. I understand the anticipation and the excitement and the presents are a big deal. Christmas morning is great but I prefer Christmas Eve. It’s candles and songs and cookies. When I was a kid, I went to three iterations of the same church service, every Christmas Eve. My Dad was a preacher and Christmas was his second busiest time of the year. The warm glow of a church on Christmas Eve contains a deep magic. The same words will be read in millions of churches all over the world on this same day. Millions of people are joining together with this identical incantation. After the words are said, there will be communion and candles. Most likely, the service will end with a powerful rendition of “Silent Night.” I love Christmas Eve. However you spend your Christmas Eve, I hope that you encounter at least a little bit of that magic.
